In 2001 Muse came out with its sophomore album titled The Origin of Symmetry. The English band recorded the album in the UK and when released reached #3 on their charts but was not officially released in the US till 2005. There are many fabulously unique qualities to the album such as the use of a pipe organ, one of the drawbacks to this is some of the songs that use it are rarely performed live. The album has a unique mix of high pitched vocals, guitar and piano playing which really emphasis the musicianship of the band.
This is an incredible album and don’t understand why it is so overlooked. There has been some critiques that say that Mathew Bellamy’s higher pitched vocals makes it not as “listener friendly”, some of the songs were even changed from there orginal version to make them more acceptable for the radio. I disagree I think Bellamy’s high vocals, the mix of guitar riffs, hard rock drums, organ, synth and classic piano give the album a awesomely haunting feel that’s kinda creepy but pretty awesome and intriguing at the same time.
New Born the first song on the album starts off with a dark haunting sound, and like many of the songs on the album with the organ it gives it almost a Phantom of the Opera feel (it’s no wonder that the author of Twilight gets so much inspiration from the band for her vampire novels). In the middle of new born though it breaks into an intense hard rock anthem with reminds me why I love Muse so much. Mathew’s vocals and the mix of piano is unlike anything out there, many people talk about Muse sounds so much like Radiohead but the two bands hardly have anything musically in common.
Bliss the second song on the album is also one of favs. The song has awesome lyrics and great drums and synth. It’s a great song and like it says “Everything about you is so easy to love”.
Feeling Good is one of the most popular songs on the album and its easy to understand why. It’s been covered by many other bands even American Idols Adam Lambert did a cover of it last year. It’s a great song with universal lyrics that’s an easy listen and hard not to love.
All in all its in incredible album and defiantly underrated. I can understand sometimes why it wouldn’t appeal to main stream listeners but there’s defiantly a song there for everyone. If you love hard rock and love Muse this is defiantly an album you should check out.
